The Portuguese first arrived in Sri Lanka in 1505 and established a trading post in Galle. They began construction on the fort in 1588 and completed it in 1589. The fort was designed as a military defense and was used to protect the Portuguese trading post from attacks by foreign powers.

The fort became a hub of trade and commerce and was an important center of power for the Dutch in Sri Lanka.
